The publicist, patriot, Teacher of the People, Sali Nivica, one of the leaders of the Albanian National Movement and director of the “Populli” (“The people”) newspaper, was killed in Shkodër. He was born in the Kurvelesh region. He finished the “Zosimea” high school in Ioannina (1909). In 1909-1910 he was a teacher in Durrës. He participated in the organization of the anti-Ottoman uprisings in South Albania in 1911-1912. He was imprisoned by the Ottoman authorities. After leaving prison, he taught the Albanian language at the American high school Roberts College in Istanbul. He returned to Albania with the Declaration of Independence and in 1914-1915, in the newspaper “Populli”, where he wrote a series of articles with a patriotic, democratic, and anti-feudal spirit. In 1916-1918 he worked in the field of education. In 1919-1920 he directed the newspaper “Populli” (“The people”), in which he defended the independence and territorial integrity of the Albanian state and the issue of national unification.
