Thanas Floqi, lawyer, National Movement activist, publicist, linguist, composer, translator, was born in Korçë. He completed primary and secondary school in Greece. He started his higher law studies at the University of Athens but interrupted them and returned to his homeland. After a short stay in Albania, he emigrated to the USA, where in cooperation with Albanian compatriots they founded the “Mall i mëmëdheut” society, which was later included in the “Vatra” federation. In 1908, he returned to Albania and stayed in Vlora and Korça, where he continued his patriotic, educational, and cultural activities. After the Declaration of National Independence (1912), Thanas Floqi worked as a lawyer in the state administration in Vlora, as a translator at the International Border Commission in Shkodër, and in March 1914, he was appointed chief secretary in the Ministry of Justice of Vilhelm Vid’s government.
