Rexhep Krasniqi (1906-1999), political and national education activist, passed away in New York. He was born in Gjakova. He completed the “Theresianum” lyceum in Vienna and higher studies in philosophy in Vienna, where in July 1934 he defended his doctorate on the topic “Congress of Berlin and Northeast Albania”. He settled in Albania and first worked as a professor of geography and history in the high school of Gjirokastra and, later, vice-director of that high school. In 1938, he was transferred to Tirana as director of Secondary Education, later inspector in the Ministry of Education. At the end of 1941, he was appointed director of the “Sami Frashëri” Normal School in Prishtina, where he simultaneously taught the German language. Minister of Education (February-April 1943) in Maliq Bushati’s government. He participated in the Founding Congress of League II of Prizren and was its vice president for a period. Vice President of the National Assembly convened at the instigation of the German invaders, on October 6-27, 1943. On the eve of the country’s liberation, Rexhep Krasniqi left Albania. He stayed in Italy, Syria, Australia, USA, where he was one of the main leaders of the “Shqipëria e Lirë” Committee, which he led until 1992. He is the author of a number of articles and works in historiography and collaborator in the newspapers “Kosova”, “Bashkimi i Kombit” (“The Unification of the Nation”), “Lidhja e Prizrenit” (“League of Prizren”), etc. In 1994, he was decorated with the title “Naim Frashëri” of the first class.
