Constantine the Great (Flavius Valerius Constantinus), who ruled the Roman Empire, was born in Naissus, (Nishi of Kosova, in today’s Serbia). During his time as emperor, Constantine the Great helped strengthening the empire by restructuring the government and increasing civil and military authorities. Constantine was one of the famous emperors of Rome and the first to proclaim Christianity. He ruled during the 4th century, and some of his notable achievements include his support of Christianity, the building of the city of Constantinople, and the continuation of Diocletian’s reforms. He also ran successful campaigns. The Church of the East considers him as the greatest saint. Fan Noli talks about the Albanian origin of Constantine the Great. In the text of the “Himni i flamurit” (“The Flag’s Anthem”) (1926), among other things, it is said: “Flag (meaning the Albanian flag) that gave birth to Saint Constantine”.
