Gustav Meyer, a linguist, albanologist, Indo-Europeanist, and professor, passed away. Born in Gros Strehlitz, Germany, in 1850, he is regarded as one of the most prominent Albanologists. He studied classical philology, Indo-European languages, modern Greek, and Sanskrit, and served as a professor of ancient languages at the University of Göttingen, Prague, and Graz. In 1881, while at the University of Graz, Meyer intensified his research in Albanology. He published several significant works, including “Studime shqiptare I” (“Albanian Studies I”) (1882), “Për indoevropianishten e kryera në morfologjinë e shqipes” (“On Indo-European Conducted in the Morphology of Albanian”) (Florence, 1886), “Gramatikë e përmbledhur e shqipes” (“Summary Grammar of Albanian”) (Leipzig, 1888), “Elementet latine në gjuhën shqipe” (“Latin Elements in the Albanian Language”) (1888), and “Fjalor etimologjik i gjuhës shqipe” (“Etymological Dictionary of the Albanian Language”) (Strasbourg, 1891). He defended the thesis that the Albanian language originated from Illyrian and established its position within the family of Indo-European languages, also creating the first etymological dictionary of Albanian.
