Azem Hajdari, political activist and one of the main figures of the Democratic Party of Albania, was born in the city of Bajram Curri. He completed high school in his hometown. He completed higher studies at the Faculty of Political-Legal Sciences of the University of Tirana, where he graduated in the field of philosophy (1991). Then he graduated from the Faculty of Law (1994). He became known in December 1990, when he came to the head of the Student Movement of December. He was one of the founders and main leaders of the Democratic Party of Albania. He was elected four times as a member of the Assembly by direct vote. Azem Hajdari headed the Parliamentary Commission for Order, SHIK and Defense for about 7 years. In articles, interviews, and speeches over 8 years, he demanded the establishment of democracy and the rule of law, the eradication of the monist state ideology and practices, and showed special interest in the national problem, the issue of Kosova, the rights of Albanians outside the state borders of Albania. After the transition of the Democratic Party to the opposition (1997), Azem Hajdari continued to assist in the preservation and development of democratic standards in Albania. In September 1997, he was injured in an assassination attempt in the Parliament hall. Several assassination attempts were made against him in the form of ambushes. He was killed in front of the headquarters of the Democratic Party, in Tirana (1998). Azem Hajdari has been decorated with the Orders “Nderi i Kombit”, “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu” and in Kosova with the gold medal “Lidhja Shqiptare e Prizrenit”. (In the photo: Azem Hajdari)
