On April 1, 1997, in Prishtina, the poet Fahredin Gunga (1936–1997) passed away. Born in Mitrovica, he completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown and went on to study Albanian language and literature in Belgrade. He worked as a teacher in his hometown, a journalist for Rilindja, and an editor at the publishing department of the Rilindja publishing house. He also served as the editor-in-chief of Prishtina Television. Gunga began his literary career in the 1950s, gaining recognition in the early 1960s. He belonged to a generation of poets who introduced new themes, forms, and expressive techniques to post-war Albanian poetry. His works include “Whispers of the Morning” (1961), “Sleeping Curses” (1970), “Stony Psalms” (1977), “Awakened Curses” (1985), among others. Fahredin Gunga’s poetry is marked by an existential reflection on the tragic fate of humankind. His poetic voice is lyrical, dramatic, yet also abstract and symbolic. (In photo: Fahredin Gunga)
