Xhemal Ali Pazari

Xhemal Ali Pazari, activist of the Albanian National Movement, was born in Tirana. Descends from an old clerical patriotic family, Halveti sect. He graduated in theology and philosophy at the University of Al-Azhar, in Egypt. Xhemali was a patriot who blessed the raising of the flag and the independence of Albania, on November 26th, 1912, in Tirana. In 1924, he was elected deputy and for more than a decade he was one of the main leaders of the Albanian Muslim Community, while in 1924 he was the deputy mayor of the Municipality of Tirana. On February 17th, 1948, the Tirana Military Court declared him guilty “as a participant in an adversary group” in Teqe of Ali Sheh Pazar, with which he “performed activities for the overthrow of popular power”. The court sentenced him to 3 years of imprisonment, the confiscation of movable and immovable property, as well as the loss of electoral rights for 3 years. He was 83 years old when he was sentenced. Communist forces shot his son, Besim Pazari, and confiscated his property. The whole family was persecuted with imprisonments, exiles and deportations. (In the photo: Xhemal Ali Pazari)
