Dom Joseph Marksen, a martyr of the Catholic Church, was born in Worringen, Germany. He studied philosophy in St. Augustine and theology in Mölding (Vienna, Austria). He was ordained as a priest in Munich on June 21, 1936. Upon arriving in Albania, he worked in Kthella (Mirditë) and, from 1937, served as a parish priest in Perlat in Lezha. In 1943, he became the parish priest in Juba in Durrës. He was arrested in Shijak at the beginning of February 1945 and was subsequently imprisoned in Tirana, where he was sentenced to two years in prison and confined in a high-security prison for war criminals.
