Aleksandra Mano

Aleksandra Mano, the first Albanian archaeologist and a specialist in the period of antiquity, passed away. She was born in the village of Postenan in Leskovik in 1924. She participated in the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War as a partisan in the Cermenika detachment in 1942. After the war, she completed her higher studies in history at the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Tirana in 1955, after which she began her work in archaeology at the Institute of Sciences. Throughout her career, Aleksandra Mano directed excavations in several significant ancient sites, most notably in Apollonia, as well as Dyrrah, Dimal, and Olympe. Her academic contributions are reflected in numerous studies and articles. Notable among her works are those focusing on the tumular and flat necropolis of Apollonia and aspects of Hellenic colonization in Southern Illyria. Her monograph “Apolonia and Illyria” (2006) is particularly noteworthy for its insights and contributions to the field. Aleksandra Mano’s groundbreaking work has left a lasting impact on Albanian archaeology and the understanding of the country’s ancient history. (In the photo: Aleksandra Mano)
