Maxhun Çekaj

Maxhun Çekaj, a fighter of the Kosovo Liberation Army and a martyr, fell heroically in battle. He was born in the village of Irzniq in the municipality of Deçan in 1941. He pursued his education in Irzniq, Prishtina, and Gjakova. During his military service in Maribor, Slovenia, he completed the reserve officer school and later obtained a degree from the Faculty of Defense and Security in Belgrade. From 1962 to 1998, Çekaj worked in the field of education. When the war broke out in Dukagjin, he joined the ranks of the Kosovo Liberation Army and was appointed commander of the local headquarters for Irzniq. For several months, Irzniq served as a crucial base for the Kosovo Liberation Army in the Operational Zone of Dukagjin, housing a military hospital and accommodating many displaced individuals from war zones. Çekaj was also responsible for the frontline in Gerdaja, positioned between Prilep and Carrabreg. On August 11, 1998, he, along with 50 to 60 soldiers of the Kosovo Liberation Army, confronted the attacks of Serbian forces. After 12 hours of intense fighting, Maxhun Çekaj fell heroically, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and dedication to the cause of freedom for Kosovo. (In the photo: Maxhun Çekaj)
