In Boston (USA), Pandi Mele, an Albanian painter and graphic artist of the 20th-21st centuries, “Meritorious Painter,” passed away. He was born in Hoçisht, Korçë, in 1939. Artist Pandi Mele attended the artistic high school “Jordan Misja” in Tirana; he completed his studies in graphics at the Repin Academy of Arts in Leningrad (Russia, 1959–1961) and graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Tirana (1964). He worked as a graphic modeler and editorial responsible at the publishing house “Naim Frashëri” in Tirana. He was a teacher and head of the graphic workshop at the Institute of Fine Arts in Tirana (1975–1994). Mele was the first Albanian graphic artist to apply graphic cycles (compositions) based on Albanian literary works or legends, such as the cycle “Motive Migjeniane” (“Migenian Motifs”)(1964), the graphic series “Shtypi i partisë” (“The party press”) (1984), and the cycle “Rozafa” (1999, the artist’s studio). Pandi Mele significantly influenced contemporary graphic art with his work, both in technique and concept. Mele has created posters, emblems, postage stamps, and various illustrations. Mele has been included in “The Grove Dictionary of Art,” 2000, Macmillan Publishers Limited, New York. (In the photo: Mele’s work entitled “Innovators”, 1980, oil on canvas.)
