Alfred Uçi was born in Korçë, a pedagogue of philosophy and aesthetics at the University of Tirana, a professor, and an academic. In his youth, he participated in the National Liberation Antifascist War, in the ranks of the IX Assault Brigade. He pursued his higher studies in philosophy at Moscow’s “Lomonosov” University (1954). For a long period, he taught philosophy and aesthetics at the University of Tirana. He dedicated himself from the beginning to the study of the Albanian philosophical thought heritage, publishing monographs on the life and work of Jani Vreto and Theodhor Kavalioti. From 1979 to 1986, he was the director of the Institute of Folk Culture, editor-in-chief of the magazine “Kultura Popullore” (“Folk Culture”), and of a series of scientific and documentary publications of that institute; from 1987 to 1990, chairman of the Committee of Culture and Arts and Minister of Culture. After this, he devoted himself entirely to scientific work, publishing a series of studies in the field of aesthetics and considering not only Albanian authors but also authors from the most renowned of world literature. Among his major works are: “Estetika, jeta, arti” (“Aesthetics, life, art”) (1970), “Probleme të estetikës” (“Issues of aesthetics”) (1976), “Mitologjia, folklori, letërsia” (“Mitology, folklor, literature”) (1982), “Çështje teorike të estetikës dhe të kulturës” (“Theoretical issues of aesthetics and culture”) (1986), “Shekspiri në botën shqiptare” (“Shakespeare in the Albanian world”) (1996), “Prometheus and Hamlet” (in Greek, Athens, 1998), “Estetika në letërsinë shqipe” (“Aesthetics in Albanian literature”) (2001), “Filozofia e Teodor Anastas Kavaliotit” (“The philosophy of Teodor Anastas Kavalioti”) (2004), “Estetika e folklorit” (“Aesthetics of folklore”) (2007), etc. He received the First-Class Republic Prize three times.
