Dom Simon Jubani, a catholic clergyman, was born in Shkodër. At the age of 16, he started the Apostolic School of the Jesuits. After the closing of the catholic schools, in March 1946 he went to the State High School. In 1957-1958, he took the orders of the priesthood and was sent to Mirdita as a parish priest, where he was arrested. He served 26 years in prison. He was released on April 13, 1989. On November 4, 1990, he celebrated the first public mass, in the burnt chapel of the Rrëmaj cemetery, in the presence of 200-300 believers. On the 11th of the same month, always in the chapel of Rrëmaj, he celebrated the second public mass, this time with a well-prepared, programmatic speech, which broke the 23-year silence. In 1991, the University of San Francisco in California awarded him the degree “Doctor Honoris Causa” in humanities. In July 1996, the state of Michigan honored him with a special degree. He passed away in the hospital of the city of Shkodra, in 2011. (In the photo: Simon Jubani during the mass.)
