Pashko Gjeçi, translator and poet, was born in Shkodër. He received his first lessons in his hometown, where he completed his secondary studies at the Franciscan high school. He completed his higher studies in literature and philology at “La Sapienza” University of Rome. In 1942, he returned to his homeland. After the liberation of the country, he suffered political imprisonment for a while; then he worked in education, but he also dedicated himself to translation, work that he had started at a young age, with the Albanian translation of some songs from Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy”. He has brought into Albanian such prominent poets of world literature, such as: Homer (“Odyssey”), Dante (“Divine Comedy”), Shakespeare (“Hamlet”), Goethe (the first part of “Faust”), Rasin (“Andromaka“) etc. His translations are distinguished by metrical-artistic values and high craftsmanship. The translation of the “Divine Comedy” in a special way constitutes one of the most outstanding and lasting achievements of the entire culture of translation into the Albanian language.
