Dom Shtjefën Kurti, martyr of the Catholic Church, was shot in the village of Gurrëz in Lezhë. He was born in Ferizaj, Kosovo, in 1898. He studied at the Shkodra Seminary, then in Innsbruck, Austria, and finally, in 1919, in Rome. He was ordained a priest in Rome on May 13, 1921. In 1930 he returned to Albania for the Diocese of Durrës, currently Tirana-Durrës. In Kosovo, he was a parish priest in Ferizaj and Novoselë. In Albania, he was the parish priest of Zheja, Gurrëz, Tirana. He was arrested twice: the first time in Tirana on October 27, 1946 and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, of which he served 17, in the terrible prison of Burrel; the second time he was arrested in Gurrëz, on June 11, 1970.
