Skënder Sallaku, a celebrated comedian and People’s Artist, was born in Tirana in 1935 and passed away later in life. Initially, he studied at the High Institute of Physical Culture “Vojo Kushi,” but he gained widespread recognition for his talent in comedy and became a professional actor with Tirana’s Variety Theater (“Estrada e Tiranës”) in 1956. Throughout his career, Sallaku performed over 1,000 roles, showcasing a vast range of characters. His work extended to film, with notable performances in “Estrada në Ekran” (“Estrada on Screen”) (1968) and “Kur Hiqen Maskat” (“When the Masks Come Off“) (1975).
He also excelled in theatrical comedy, taking on memorable roles such as Jourdain in Molière’s “Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme” and Sancho Panza in the stage adaptation of Cervantes’ “Don Quixote”. Sallaku also appeared in popular comedy films, including “Gjuetia e Fundit” (“The Last Hunt”) (1992), “Revolja e Humbur” (“The Lost Revolver”) (1994), and “Oreksi i Madh” (“The Big Appetite”) (1996). Known for his highly expressive mimicry—especially with his eyes—and his flexible, acrobatic movements, Sallaku’s talent was further honed through a one-year specialization in China (1960–1961), where he trained as an acrobat and circus clown.
His distinctive voice, combined with his natural ability for comic timing, made him one of Albania’s most beloved comedians. In addition to his acting career, Sallaku was also a talented athlete, becoming Albania’s national wrestling champion in the 57 kg category in 1959 and 1960.
