Marti Ahtisari (Ahtisaari), Finnish politician, mediator in solving international disputes, laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, was born in Vipuri (then part of Finland). From 1994 to 2000 he served as the tenth president of Finland. During the NATO air campaign in 1999, together with the delegate of the Russian Federation, Viktor Chernomyrdin, he negotiated with the president of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic. In 2006, he was appointed Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN in the process of resolving the status of Kosovo. He led the negotiations between Kosovo and Serbia during the years 2005-2007. For his commitment to solving a number of international disputes, such as in Namibia, Aceh-Indonesia, Kosovo and Iraq, in 2008 he was awarded the “Nobel Peace” prize. Then he headed the “Crisis Management Initiative “, also known as the “Marti Ahtisari Center”, an organization committed to the prevention and resolution of conflicts, as well as to sustainable peace in the world.
