This intervention aimed to seize another part of Albanian territory and force the Albanian government to pursue a pro-Yugoslav policy. From July 26th to August 21st, 1920, Yugoslav forces occupied several areas in the Malësia e Shkodrës and reached Koplik. Due to the counterattack of Albanian forces, Serbian armies were forced to retreat to the border defined in 1913. On August 21st, Yugoslav military forces launched a new attack and captured Kelmend, Kastrat, Shkrel, and Koplik (Malësia e Shkodrës). To confront the advance of Serbian forces, over 3000 Albanian fighters from Shkodra and surrounding regions gathered and lined up on the front lines. A volunteer force of 400 individuals stood on the banks of the Buna River to counter a possible Yugoslav attack in that direction. Faced with the determined resistance of Albanian forces and lacking international support, on February 14th, 1921, the Yugoslav government was forced to withdraw its troops from the Malësia e Shkodrës and abandoned Kastrat, leaving behind burnt villages. (In the photo: Fighters in the defense of Shkodra.)

Text: Albanian encyclopedic dictionary – Vol. 2 , Academy of Sciences of Albania, “Kristalina-KH”, Tirana, 2008, page 1549.

Photo: © National Museum of Photography “Marubi”, Shkodër.

Graphic processing: AHCF

The “Battle of Koplik” took place, a war against Yugoslav military intervention in the region of Shkodra.

[17

post-6311","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ngjarje
["GET
