Ibrahim Rugova, the first president of the Republic of Kosova, chairman of the Democratic League of Kosova and researcher, passed away in Prishtina. He completed secondary school in Peja (1967) and completed his higher studies in Albanian language and literature at the University of Prishtina. In 1976\u20131977 he studied at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes <\/i>(Practical School of Higher Studies), in Paris. In 1984, he defended his doctoral thesis in literature at the University of Prishtina. In 1988, he was elected chairman of the Writers’ Association of Kosova. With the formation of the Democratic League of Kosova, he was elected its chairman (23.12.1989) and remained in this position until 2005. With the formation of other Albanian political parties, he was elected chairman of the Coordinating Council of Political Parties of the Albanians of Kosova (22.07.1991). During the direct parliamentary and presidential elections of May 1992 and June 1998, organized by the political parties and Albanian institutions of Kosova, Ibrahim Rugova was elected president of the Republic of Kosova. He was re-elected president of the Republic of Kosova in March 2002 and in December 2004. Ibrahim Rugova is the laureate of many international awards and decorations, among which: the Peace Prize of the “Paul Litzer” Foundation, in Denmark (1995); The Peace Prize of the Democratic Union of Catalonia “Manuel Carrosco i Farmiguera”.
