In 2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a resolution declaring January 27 as the “International Day of Remembrance in honor of the victims of the Holocaust.” This day commemorates the millions of victims of the Nazi genocide policies, which were carried out during World War II, and focuses on contemporary efforts to combat hatred and anti-Semitism. During World War II, in the Nazi regime’s systematic attempt to eradicate Jews, around six million people were killed. Jews from all over Germany and the European countries occupied by it were gathered in concentration camps, where they were poisoned with gas, shot, or left to die of hunger. The death camps, places of terror, were liberated on January 27, 1945. The role of Albania in saving Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust is globally known. Albania is one of the rare countries in the world where, during World War II, not only the Jews living in Albania but also thousands of Jews from Balkan and Central European countries found refuge and salvation. ‪(In the photograph: Two illustrative photographs.)

Text: National History Museum

Photo: © National History Museum

Graphic processing: AHCF

[17

post-6418","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ngjarje
["GET
