His father was arrested at a young age. From the suffering, the mother <i>&#8211; <\/i>after her brother and then her nephew were shot <i>&#8211; <\/i>suffered a nervous breakdown and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, leaving the children alone. Muftiu completed the pedagogic school in Berat, and for some time worked as a teacher. He was arrested in December 1975, in Vlora. On April 20, 1976, the District Court of Berat declared him guilty of &#8220;agitation and propaganda against people\u2019s power&#8221; and sentenced him to 10 years in prison; his property was confiscated and he lost his electoral right for a period of 5 years. He served his sentence in Spa\u00e7i prison, where he was re-sentenced.
