He completed his secondary education in the village of Nivan, near his birthplace. In 1882 he went to Egypt, where he attended a French high school in Alexandria. In 1887, he began his higher studies at the University of Geneva (Switzerland), where he graduated in law (1892). In the years 1894-1895, he worked for a short time as a lawyer in Cairo and then became involved in the patriotic movement of the Albanians of Egypt, becoming one of its most active organizers and leaders. In wide patriotic circles, he immediately became known with the article “Duke kërkuar një alfabet” (“In search of an alphabet”)(1898), where he dealt with the issue of the alphabet of the Albanian language, requesting the use of the Latin alphabet. As an active participant in the patriotic movement, in 1919, Çajupi became the chairman of the “Vëllazëria” society based in Cairo. During this time, he became the inspiration and one of the drafters of the memorandum that the Albanians of Egypt sent to the Peace Conference in Paris (1919), for the protection of the territorial integrity of the Albanian state. Andon Zako Çajupi’s literary activity started almost at the same time as his patriotic activity. In 1902, he published in Cairo the volume “Baba Tomorri,” a collection of poems where the popular style of poetic discourse, the soft tones of lyrical inspiration, as well as the harsh satirical tones, stand out. Çajupi’s patriotic lyrics, although continuing the tradition of Naimi’s poetry, were a new phenomenon in terms of pathos and poetic imagery. It brought to the literature of the time a more current spirit and a new sensitivity to the social and political reality of the time. Against the dreamy tones of Naimi’s poetry and his nostalgia, Çajupi’s poetry stands out mainly for its combative tones and sarcastic notes. In the volume “Baba Tomorri” Çajupi is one of the first successful ballad performers. He enriched the Albanian ballad with political and social issues using folk motifs, or some biblical motifs. In the history of Albanian literature, Çajupi is also known as one of the first authors of the dramaturgical genre, especially of the comedy genre. The comedies “14 vjeç dhëndër” (“4-year-old bridgegroom”) and “Pas vdekjes” (“After death”) (published posthumously in 1937, but written in 1909–1910), the first a comedy of customs and the second a political-social comedy, remain classic works in the Albanian theater repertoire. Çajupi remains one of the most prominent representatives of traditional literature; patriotic and democratic writer, with his work he paved the way for realism in Albanian literature. His remains were brought home in 1957 and rest in the memorial of the revivalists in Gjirokastër. Cultural and educational institutions of the country bear the name of Çajupi. (In the photo: Andon Zako Çajupi)

Text: Albanian encyclopedic dictionary – Vol. 1 , Academy of Sciences of Albania, “Kristalina-KH”, Tirana, 2008, page 370-372.

Photo: © https://sq.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andon_Zako_%C3%87ajupi

Graphic processing: AHCF

Andon Zako Çajupi, poet and dramatist, patriotic and democratic activist, was born in Sheper of Zagoria.

[15

post-6673","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ditelindje
["GET
