Wilhelm Wied came to Albania on March 7, 1914, in a complicated national and international situation. During his six-month rule, he tried to connect with the democratic elements, in addition to the conservative ones, that dominated the Albanian political scene. He tried to maintain the balance between the interests of the Great Powers in Albania. Under the pressure of the Great Powers, he made concessions to the detriment of the sovereignty of the Albanian state and in favor of the Greek expansionist circles. After the outbreak, in May 1914, of the Uprising of Central Albania against him, he was forced to remain isolated in Durrës, protected by his own forces. With the start of the First World War in August 1914, the political balance between the European Great Powers was broken and Wilhelm Wied also lost international support. He formally abdicated and was forced to leave Albania on September 3, 1914. (In the photo: Prince Wilhelm Wied.)

Text: Albanian encyclopedic dictionary – Vol. 3 , Academy of Sciences of Albania, “Kristalina-KH”, Tirana, 2009, page 2884.

Photo: © https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm,_Prince_of_Albania

Graphic processing: AHCF

On April 18, 1945, Wilhelm Wied, a German prince from a protestant family, appointed by the Great European Powers, in October 1913, to head the Albanian state, died in Romania.

[16

post-6775","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vdekje
["GET
