The “Albanian Exodus” took place, marking a decisive turning point in the history of Albania. On the night of July 2, 1990, a young man named Ylli Bodinaku broke through the wall of the German embassy in Albania with his truck, a “Skoda.” In his truck were women and children along with a total of 36 friends and acquaintances. Dozens of others followed him into the embassy through the wall he knocked down. This event was also reported in foreign media, where the first individuals to enter the German embassy in Albania were hailed as heroes of Albanian democracy. The German ambassador at the time, Werner Daum, opened the doors of the embassy in July 1990. He instructed his staff to leave the lights on before they left and to keep the embassy door open. More than 3000 people stayed at the German embassy under extremely difficult conditions, with water and food supplies cut off, awaiting the reaction and decision of the communist regime. Subsequently, thousands of Albanians, overcoming the fear of a 45-year dictatorship, headed from various cities in Albania with their children towards foreign embassies, unaware that this action would impact the course of future events in our country. The news of the rush to embassies was not initially reported. As their numbers grew rapidly, the reporting of this news was inevitable, with those inside the embassies being labeled as criminals. July 2, 1990, marked one of the most important moments in a process that lasted until December 1990 when student demonstrations began, bringing about the advent of pluralism in Albania. Numerous documents from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Central Committee testify that the police forces and security structures failed in their efforts to prevent and stop these events, which signaled the complete downfall of the regime. The large exodus of Albanians dealt a final blow to the harsh communist regime, making possible the long-awaited change and the arrival of freedom.
