He was a writer, linguist, and philologist. After his early education, he attended the Saverian College (St. Francis Saver College) in Shkod\u00ebr and worked as a teacher in the mountainous regions for a year. In 1948, he fled Albania, initially settling in Yugoslavia, where he began studying Romance languages and Balkan studies at the University of Belgrade in 1949. From 1956 to 1960, he attended the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Rome and was appointed lecturer in Albanian language at the university. In 1961, he moved to Germany, where he defended his doctorate in Albanology and was appointed associate professor of Albanian language and literature at the University of Munich in 1965, later becoming a full professor (1971\u20131990). He maintained close ties with his compatriots through the Albanian diaspora and Kosovo. In the early stages of his poetic career, Martin Camaj drew inspiration from traditional and folkloric artistic means. His early volumes are influenced by motifs of his homeland. In his poetry, Martin Camaj predominantly prefers free verse, skillfully employing the linguistic variant of Gheg Albanian. Equally remarkable as an artistic individual, Martin Camaj also excelled in prose. He also produced dramas. As one of the prominent Albanologists, Martin Camaj left a series of important works in the field of linguistics. Among them are: &#8220;<i>Il Messale di Gjon Buzuku<\/i>&#8221; (Gjon Buzuku&#8217;s Missal), 1961; &#8220;<i>Albanische Wortbildung<\/i>&#8221; (Albanian Word Formation), 1966; &#8220;<i>Lehrbuch der albanischen Sprache<\/i>&#8221; (Textbook of Albanian Language), 1969; &#8220;<i>La parlata Albanese di Greci in provincia di Avellino<\/i>&#8221; (The Albanian Dialect of Greci in the Province of Avellino), 1971; &#8220;<i>Die albanische Mundart von Falkonara Albanese in der Provinz Cosenza<\/i>&#8221; (The Albanian Dialect of Falkonara Albanese in the Province of Cosenza), 1977; &#8220;<i>Albanian Grammar<\/i>&#8220;, 1984, and others. Martin Camaj also published a range of studies on the history of the Albanian language, etymology, dialectology, grammar, old texts, literature, folklore, etc. His works and personality became known in Albania after the change of the system in 1990, being included in literary texts and studied in special scientific studies.
