He was born in 1822. As early as 1847, while attending the “Zosimea” gymnasium in Janina, he wrote the poem “Historia e Skënderbeut” (The History of Skanderbeg) and began to take an interest in the Albanian language and the national cause. In 1854, he settled in Istanbul. He collected material for an Albanian dictionary and early Albanian writings, folk songs, and proverbs, created and used an original alphabet. He collaborated with Naum Veqilharxhi, Jeronim de Rada, Thimi Mitko, and others. In 1864, he participated, along with Ismail Qemal Vlora, Hasan Tahsini, Kostandin Kristoforidhi, Pashko Vasa, Sami Frashëri, etc., in the first meetings to establish the Albanian alphabet, for the preparation and publication of books in the Albanian language. In 1879, he took part in the commission that drafted the Istanbul alphabet. Along with Naim and Sami Frashëri, he wrote the first primer with the new alphabet and directed the publication of the magazine “Drita,” which later was renamed “Dituria.” After the printing of the League of Prizren, he was subjected to political persecution and forced to leave Turkey. He went to Egypt and Romania, where he organized branches of the Society of Letters. With his initiative and with the help of Romanian patriots, a printing press was established, and the publication of many Albanian books (primers, reading books, poetry, etc.) began, which spread to schools and patriotic circles in Albania. Jani Vreto took care of the publication of Sami Frashëri’s “Shkronjëtores së gjuhësë shqipe,” (Albanian Language Grammar), Naim Frashëri’s books “Vjersha për mësonjëtoret e para” (Poems for the First Schools) and “Bagëti e bujqësia” (Livestock and Agriculture), and many other books. Jani Vreto published a series of books and articles: “Apologjia” (Apology) (1878), “Për të vërtetën dhe për të shkruarit e së vërtetës” (For Truth and for Writing the Truth) (1883), “Well-being” (Mirëvetija) (1886), “The Path (history) of Albanian writing,”( Udhë (histori) e të shkruarit të gjuhës shqip) etc. Jani Vreto believed in the enlightening power of man and, in the spirit of Enlightenment, believed that sciences contribute to the progress of society. He paid special attention to the problems of social development. In the work “Mirëvetija” (ethics), he presented his ethical ideas, which were closely linked to the duties of national liberation. In the first part of this book, he raised issues of the formation of the worldview and morality of man and the attitude towards religious beliefs. He was tolerant of every belief and expressed himself against fanaticism, enmity, and religious division. (In the photo: Jani Vreto)

Text: Albanian encyclopedic dictionary – Vol. 3 , Academy of Sciences of Albania, “Kristalina-KH”, Tirana, 2009, page 2920-2921.

Photo: © https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jani_Vreto

Graphic processing: AHCF

[16

post-6865","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vdekje
["GET
