Adem Dema\u00e7i, a prominent figure in Kosovo’s national movement and human rights advocate, passed away in Prishtina. Born in Prishtina in 1936, he attended the Higher Pedagogical School in Skopje, continued his studies in legal sciences in Prishtina, and pursued literature studies in Belgrade. In the 1950s, he worked at the newspaper “Rilindja” and the publishing house “Rilindja,” where he published a variety of journalistic writings, stories, poems, and literary translations. He became well-known for his work “Gjarpinjt e gjakut” (The Snakes of Blood) in 1958, which addressed the painful issue of blood feuds. From a young age, he engaged in the national movement of Kosovo Albanians, raising his voice against displacement and national discrimination. In 1958, he was sentenced to 3 years in prison. After his release in 1961, he continued his activities illegally, founding the organization “Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians,” which aimed to unify Kosovo with Albania. For this activism, he was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment in 1964. During the trial, he defended his views on the unification of Albanian lands, gaining recognition among the people of Kosovo. He was released from prison on June 8, 1974, but was arrested for the third time after a year and sentenced to another 15 years of imprisonment. He was released on April 28, 1990. For his suffering during 28 years of imprisonment as a dissident in Yugoslavia, he was awarded the Sakharov Prize in Strasbourg in 1991. He continued his national activism, becoming the political representative of the Kosovo Liberation Army in 1998. He held this position until February 1999 when he resigned due to disagreement with the participation of Albanians in the Rambouillet Conference. After Kosovo came under the administration of the United Nations, Adem Dema\u00e7i lectured at the journalism department of the University of Prishtina and engaged in social activities to protect human rights in Kosovo.
