Bekim Fehmiu, the great Albanian actor, was born in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). He completed primary school and high school in Prizren. In 1955, he was accepted as an actor at the Provincial People’s Theater in Pristina. He studied acting at the Belgrade Academy of Theater and Film (1960). From 1958 to 1967, he played in the Yugoslav Drama Theater, whose ensemble he was accepted as an actor in 1960. Then, until 1987, he worked as a freelance actor in the People’s Theater of Belgrade. He played over 40 roles in various shows. In 1987, due to the anti-Albanian propaganda in Serbia, he left the theater as a sign of protest. More than with the theater, he is identified with the film. He played mainly leading roles in over 50 Yugoslav films and world cinematography. His brilliance as an actor begins with the film “Feather Collectors” (1967), directed by Aleksandar Petrovi\u0107. The success of this film (nominated for two awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Oscar ) <\/i>opened the doors of world cinema for him. At this time, he signed a contract with Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis for several years. Since then, he has played alongside the stars of world cinema (Irena Papas, Claudia Cardinale, Ava Gardner, Richard Crenna, John Huston, Charlton Heston, etc.) in the films of major international productions. One of his leading roles is that of Ulysses in the series “Odysseus” (1968), directed by Franco Rossi. He was awarded with prizes in the former Yugoslavia and in Italy. He is the author of the autobiographical book “Brightness and Horror.” He passed away on June 15, 2010.
