He was born in Sheper, Zagori, in 1866. He completed his secondary education in the village of Nivan, near his hometown. In 1882, he went to Egypt, where he attended a French lyceum in Alexandria. In 1887, he began his higher education at the University of Geneva (Switzerland), graduating in law in 1892. From 1894 to 1895, he worked briefly as a lawyer in Cairo and then became involved in the patriotic movement of Albanians in Egypt, becoming one of its most active organizers and leaders. He became well-known for his article “Duke kërkuar një alfabet” (Seeking an Alphabet) (1898), addressing the issue of the Albanian alphabet and advocating for the use of the Latin alphabet. As an active participant in the patriotic movement, in 1919 Çajupi became the chairman of the “Vëllazëria” society, based in Cairo. During this time, he was the inspiration and one of the drafters of the memorandum that Albanians in Egypt sent to the Paris Peace Conference (1919) to defend the territorial integrity of the Albanian state. Çajupi’s literary activity began almost simultaneously with his patriotic activism. In 1902, he published the volume “Baba Tomorri” in Cairo, a collection of poems characterized by a folkloric style of poetic narration, gentle tones of lyrical inspiration, and sharp satirical tones. Çajupi’s patriotic poetry, although continuing the tradition of Naim’s poetry, introduced a new phenomenon in terms of passion and poetic figuration. It brought a more current spirit and a new sensitivity to the social and political reality of the time. Contrary to the dreamy tones of Naim’s poetry and his nostalgia, Çajupi’s poetry is mainly distinguished for its militant tones and sarcastic notes. In the volume “Baba Tomorri,” Çajupi also appears as one of the first successful creators of the ballad. By exploiting folk motifs or biblical motifs, he enriched Albanian ballads with political and social issues. In the history of Albanian literature, Çajupi is also known as one of the first contributors to the genre of drama, especially comedy. The comedies “14 vjeç dhëndër” (14 years son in law) and “Pas Vdekjes” (After Death) (published after his death in 1937 but written in the years 1909–1910), the former a comedy of manners and the latter a political-social comedy, have remained as classic works in the repertoire of Albanian theater. Çajupi remains one of the most prominent representatives of traditional literature; a patriotic and democratic writer, his work paved the way for realism in Albanian literature. His remains were brought back to the homeland in 1957 and buried in the memorial of the national Renaissance in Gjirokastër. Cultural and educational institutions in the country bear Çajupi’s name. (In the photo: Andon Zako Çajupi)

Text: Albanian encyclopedic dictionary – Vol. 1 , Academy of Sciences of Albania, “Kristalina-KH”, Tirana, 2008, page 370-372.

Photo: © https://commons.wikimedia.org/

Graphic processing: AHCF

[16

post-7021","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-vdekje
["GET
