He was born into a family of caravan renters and was educated at “Robert” College in Istanbul. After graduation, he worked for some time as a teacher in Elbasan, and in 1921, he began working at the “Harry Fultz” Technical School in Tirana. In the summer of 1931, he held two important conferences on the Albanian issue at the Institute of Studies in Geneva. Following the nationalization of foreign and private schools in 1933, he started working at the Albanian-American Institute of Kavaja, where he was soon appointed deputy director. With the departure of the Americans in 1939, he was elected director of the institute. After the Italian invasion, he was transferred first to serve as the rector of the boarding school of the high school in Tirana, and later as the director of the Work School in Elbasan. At the end of the war, like many other intellectuals of his stature, he was imprisoned and, without any legal procedure and based on false witness testimony, he was sentenced to seven years in prison. After his release, he was sent into exile until 1958. He passed away at the age of 87. Today, the vocational high school of foreign languages in the city of Elbasan bears his name as well as that of his brother, Mahmud Cungu. (In the photo: View of the language gymnasium “Mahmud and Ali Cungu”.)

Text: Encyclopedic dictionary of victims of communist terror – Vol. I, “West Print”, Institute for the Study of Crimes and Consequences of Communism, Tirana, 2012, page 234-235.

Photo: © Language Gymnasium “Mahmud and Ali Cungu”

Graphic processing: AHCF

Ali Cungu was born in Elbasan and was a teacher, as well as one of the most famous Albanian to English translators.

[15

post-7174","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ditelindje
["GET
