Musine Kokalari, a prose writer, passed away. She was born in Adana, Turkey, in 1917 to a family originally from Gjirokastra. She studied literature and graduated from the University of Rome between 1938 and 1941. Kokalari returned to her homeland in 1942 and became one of the founders of the Albanian Social Democratic Party in 1944. However, after the liberation, she was imprisoned and exiled as a political opponent of the regime, ultimately dying in exile in Rr\u00ebshen. While still a student, she published her first book, a collection of sketches and stories titled \u201cSi\u00e7 m\u00eb thoshte n\u00ebnua plak\u00eb\u201d (“As My Old Grandmother Used to Tell Me”) in 1939, which garnered significant interest. Following this, she published \u201cRreth vatr\u00ebs\u201d (“Around the Hearth”) in 1944, as well as “…sa u tunt jeta” (\u201cHow Life Shakes\u201d) in the same year. Her initial book is characterized by its realistic descriptions, deep understanding of life, psychology, and folk customs. The collection, “As My Old Grandmother Used to Tell Me,” is dedicated to life in Gjirokast\u00ebr and is written in the local dialect to give the prose an authentic flavor. On January 23, 1946, Kokalari was arrested by the People’s Defense Forces and was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison. She was released in 1961 but was exiled to Rr\u00ebshen, where she worked in agriculture and as a mortar worker. In 1981, she was diagnosed with cancer, which ultimately took her life two years later. In recognition of her contributions and sacrifice, she was posthumously awarded the “Martyr of Democracy” medal by the President of the Republic in 1993. (In the photo: Musine Kokalari)<\/i><\/p>\n
