He came from a family of Macedonian nationality and completed the Elbasan Normal School in 1932. He worked as a teacher in Gjirokastër, Voskopojë, Korçë, and Tirana. After the Liberation, he became an inspector in the Ministry of Education, later joining the League of Writers, of which he was a co-founder. From 1958 to 1960, he studied at the Institute of World Literature “Maxim Gorky” in Moscow. Beginning in the early 1960s, he pursued his writing career. After publishing sketches of his early stories in contemporary newspapers (“Shqipëria e Re” (“New Albania”), “Rilindja” (“Renaissance”), and others), he released two collections in 1934 featuring predominantly sentimental stories: “Kurorë rinie” (“Youth Crown”) and “Në krahët e një femre” (“In the Arms of a Woman”). A year later, he published the novel “Pse?!” (“Why?!”), which was enthusiastically received by the public and critics, followed by the novel “Afërdita” (“Aphrodite”) in 1944. In Sterjo Spasse’s post-liberation work, the literary model of socialist realism found strong expression. His novel “Ata nuk ishin vetëm” (“They Were Not Alone”) (1952) was long regarded as his principal work. In the last two decades of his life, he conceived the cycle of novels “Renaissance,” focused on the theme of the Albanian National Renaissance: “Zgjimi” (“Awakening”) (1973), “Pishtarë” (“Torches”) (1975), “Ja vdekje, ja liri” (“Here is Death, Here is Freedom”) (1978), “Rebelët” (“The Rebels”) (1983), and “O sot, o kurrë!” (“Today, or Never!”) (1987). These works, as historical novels of the classic type, are characterized by placing historical events at the center of the narrative, revealing the characters against the backdrop of these events, with a multitude of scenes and rich ethnographic details. A co-founder of the magazine “Normalisti” (“The Normalist”) (1929-1937), Sterjo Spasse also published numerous articles on pedagogy and educational issues in various periodicals, some of which were compiled in the volume “Reflekse pedagogjike” (“Pedagogical Reflections”) (1987). Through his contributions to publications such as “Revista Letrare” (“Literary Magazine”), “Literatura jonë” (“Our Literature”), and “Nëntori” (“November”) in the 1940s and 1950s, Sterjo Spasse played a prominent role in revitalizing Albanian literary life. He assisted in drafting texts of foreign and Albanian literature for eight-year and secondary schools. He passed away in Tirana in 1989. (In the photo: Sterjo Spasse)

Text: Albanian encyclopedic dictionary – Vol. 3 , Academy of Sciences of Albania, “Kristalina-KH”, Tirana, 2009, page 2377-2378.

Photo: © https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterjo_Spasse

Graphic processing: AHCF

[15

post-7245","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ditelindje
["GET
