Nako Spiru, political activist, one of the main leaders of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, of the Albanian Communist Party, of the Albanian Communist Youth and of the Albanian state after liberation, killed himself. He was born in Durrës, in 1918. He attended primary school in his hometown. He attended the Italian commercial college in Corfu. In the years 1937-1941, he studied economics at the University of Turin, which he interrupted and joined the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War. As a member of the Communist Group of Korça, he became a member of the Albanian Communist Party since its foundation. He participated in the meeting for the establishment of the Albanian Communist Youth Organization , where he was elected to the Temporary Central Committee. After the assassination of Qemal Staffa, he was elected political secretary of the Albanian Communist Party. In September 1942, he participated in the First National Liberation Conference as a representative of the Albanian Anti-Fascist Youth Union. Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Albanian Communist Party (1943), member of the National Liberation General Council (1943). In the Second Plenum of the Central Committee of the Albanian Communist Party (Berat, November 1944) he severely criticized the line and activity of the Albanian Communist Party and Enver Hoxha. After liberation, he was appointed Minister of Economy and Chairman of the State Plan Commission (1946-1947). He gave important help to the organization of the state and the rise and strengthening of the economy. In this process, he faced the interventions and intentions of the Yugoslav leadership to transform Albania’s economy into an appendage of the Yugoslav economy, to prevent the independent development of the country, and he resolutely opposed them. The Yugoslav leadership undertook a campaign of attacks against him, trying to discredit and annihilate him politically with the accusation that he was working to create a front and an anti-Yugoslav climate in Albania. In the difficult situation that was created for him as a result of the pressure of the Yugoslav leadership, to which the leadership of the Albanian Communist Party was also subjected, Nako Spiru killed himself in 1947. At the VIII Plenum of the Central Committee (February 1948) he was declared an enemy, but rehabilitated in the XI Plenum (September 1948). At the 1st Congress of the Albanian Communist Party (November 1948) he was considered a victim of Yugoslav intrigues. In 1949, he was declared “Martyr of the Nation” by the People’s Assembly.
