Eqrem Vlora, political activist, diplomat, was born in Vlora. He attended the “Theresianum<\/i>” lyceum in Vienna and studied law in Istanbul. He served in important positions in the Ottoman Empire. Later, he joined his uncle, Ismal Qemal Vlora, in the movement for the independence of Albania. After the declaration of Independence, he was elected vice-president of the Eldership. He was a known supporter of the Central Powers during the First World War, for which he was arrested by the Italians, but then became a promoter of close relations between Italy and Albania. In 1924, he was elected deputy of Vlora in the Constitutional Assembly and in 1925, he was elected senator. He has served in various diplomatic missions. In 1928, he was appointed ambassador of Albania in London and in 1930, in Athens. Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1933) and deputy of Vlora (1937). In 1942, in the government of Mustafa Kruja, he was appointed minister of Liberated Lands (the ethnic Albanian territories of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which joined Albania during the Second World War). In the cabinet of the government of Fiqri Dine (1944) he held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Justice. After the Second World War, he emigrated to Italy and then to Austria. Eqrem Vlora has written books with memories, historical, cultural and ethnographic studies, such as: “Aus Berat und vom Tomorr” <\/i>, Sarajevo 1911 (“From Berat to Tomor and back”, Tirana 2003), “I dolori del popolo Albanese” <\/i>(” Pains of the Albanian people), “Lebenserinnerungen” <\/i>I, II, Munich 1968, (“Memories”, I, II, Tirana 2001) etc. He passed away in Austria, in 1964. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, the remains of Eqrem Vlora returned to Albania, thus fulfilling his will to rest in his homeland. (In the photo: Eqrem Vlora)<\/i><\/p>\n
