The Normal School (pedagogical), the first national Albanian secondary school, was opened in Elbasan. Its first teachers were well-known compatriots and prominent people in the field of culture, such as Aleksand\u00ebr Xhuvani (graduated in Greece in philology, distinguished in the field of literature), Sotir Peci (also graduated in Greece in mathematics and physics, director of the newspaper “Kombi<\/i>“) etc. Luigj Gurakuqi was appointed its first director, who put all his strength and skills at the service of national education. Peter Dodbiba, Simon Shuteriqi, Hasan Mejza and Hafiz Ibrahim Dalliu also taught at the Normal School. The Normal School had six grades, with a curriculum of 30 subjects, humanities, natural sciences, etc. It was distinguished by its national character, which was determined by the content of the subjects and by the fact that it accepted students of all religious faiths, Muslim and Christian. Contemporary patriots valued it as a center of patriotic formation of the new generation. Already in the first year of its foundation (1909-1910), the Normal School of Elbasan had 160 students who came from all over Albania. Some of them, about 50 students, had come from Kosovo, the Plain of Dukagjin and Dibra, sent by Albanian clubs, such as that of Skopje, Dibra, etc. and with the special care of compatriots Hasan Prishtina, Bajram Curri, Nexhip Draga, etc. The further spread of schools and Albanian writing was hindered due to the outbreak of the pro-Turkish reaction against Albanian culture and the National Albanian Movement in general.
