Rexhep Hamit Demi, patriot, activist of the national movement in Chameria, died in Bari (Italy). He was born in Filat, Chameria, in 1855. As early as 1875, he became known as one of the propagandists of national ideas and the spread of Albanian education. Hasan Tahsini considered him one of his faithful students and followers. In the Preveza Assembly of 1879, Rexhep Demi was elected to the Army Headquarters of the Southern League of Albania, in which he brought many fighters from the province of Filat. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, he was connected with the Albanian societies of Bucharest, Istanbul, Sofia, Alexandria and Ioannina. The Ottoman government sentenced him to three years in prison in Ioannina. On September 20, 1908, under his leadership, the club “Shoq\u00ebria Patriotike Vllaz\u00ebria e Filatit” was formed. Rexhep Demi represented Chameria as a delegate in the National Assembly of Vlora (November 1912). He worked as an education specialist in the Government of Vlora, but after a while he returned to Chameria and organized the resistance against the army of Greek gangs that had attacked the Albanian lands of the South. He participated in the war for the defense of Ioannina (1912\u20131913) and intervened to stop the migration of the population of Chameria to Turkey by the Greek government. He was arrested by the Greek authorities and after two years in prison he came to Albania, where he worked as a teacher in Konispol, Gjirokastra, Libohova. Organized teacher training courses and prepared textbooks. He passed away in Bari (Italy), where he went for treatment. He was buried with great honors from Arb\u00ebresh in Italy.
