He was born into a family from the village of Zavalan in Dang\u00eblli (P\u00ebrmet). In 1916, he and his family moved to Thessaloniki, where he completed his secondary education at a French school. In 1922, he moved to Tirana. He was appointed secretary of the International Boundary Commission (1923). He was a member of the &#8220;Bashkimi&#8221; (Union) society and participated in the Democratic Revolution of June 1924. He was later appointed secretary of the Albanian Legation in Rome (August 1924). After the failure of the Revolution, he went to Rome as a political emigrant. In December 1925, he traveled to the Soviet Union, where he attended the military-political school &#8220;Tolma\u00e7ov&#8221; (later &#8220;Lenin&#8221;). He participated in the founding group for organizing the communist movement in Albania. In 1928, he was accepted as a candidate member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In November 1930, after the disbanding of the Albanian Communist Group in Moscow, he moved to Berlin. In January 1933, he returned to Albania. He participated in the communist group of the &#8220;Youth&#8221; movement. He worked as a translator and journalist, publishing articles of both artistic and political nature in various newspapers. He became known for his translations from Russian and French. His most famous translated book in Albanian is the novel <i>&#8220;N\u00ebna&#8221;<\/i> (&#8220;Mother&#8221;) by Maxim Gorky. After the fascist occupation of Albania, he was interned in Italy but managed to escape to Switzerland and then to France (August 1939). In 1940, he settled in London and began working in the BBC&#8217;s Albanian language section. During World War II, he engaged in intense political activity, collaborating with various political groups in exile, including with Ahmet Zog, the \u201cFree Albania\u201d Committee in America, the &#8220;Vatra&#8221; Federation, Fan Noli, and various institutions in the Allied countries, etc. After the war, he remained in London and continued anti-communist propaganda. For three years, he was the general secretary of the &#8220;Pen Club&#8221; (an anti-communist writers\u2019 club). After the establishment of the ACEN branch (Committee of Captive Nations for Europe) in 1957, Tajar Zavalani was elected as a delegate of the Albanian Committee, a position he held until the end of his life. In 1958, he converted from Islam to Catholicism and adopted the name Thomas Henry. He is the author of the book <i>How Strong Is Russia<\/i> (London, 1951), the two-volume <i>Histori e Shqipnis<\/i> (&#8220;History of Albania&#8221;), the first volume titled <i>&#8220;Nga ilir\u00ebt e deri n\u00eb Kongresin e Berlinit&#8221;<\/i> (&#8220;From the Illyrians to the Berlin Congress&#8221;, London 1957), and the second volume <i>&#8220;Nga 1878 deri m\u00eb 1965&#8221;<\/i> (&#8220;From 1878 to 1965&#8221;, London 1966). The work was republished in a single volume in Tirana in 1998.
