Fatos Nano was born in Tirana, prime minister of the Republic of Albania in several governments after the establishment of political pluralism, <\/span>chairman<\/span> of the Socialist Party of Albania from its foundation (1991) until September 1, 2005, deputy in all legislatures since 1991, professor. He completed high school in his hometown. He completed his higher studies at the Faculty of Economics (political economy branch) of the University of Tirana (1975). He worked as an economist in the Metallurgical Combine of Elbasan (1975–1978) and in the agricultural cooperative of Priska (Tirana, 1981–1983);<\/span> he worked<\/span> as a scientific associate at the Institute of Marxist-Leninist Studies (1978–1981, 1984–1990), simultaneously an external lecturer at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Tirana. He was accepted as a member of the Labor Party of Albania in 1987. In 1990, he was one of the first intellectuals who supported the democratic movement for changing the country’s economic and social system. In December 1990, he was appointed secretary general of the Council of Ministers and after a month, deputy prime minister. He was elected deputy of the Labor Party of Albania in the elections of March 31, <\/span>1991,<\/span> and received the vote of confidence from the pluralist People’s Assembly as Prime Minister of Albania. Due to the lack of stability in the country and the strikes, he resigned on June 4, 1991. At the 10th Congress of the Labor Party of Albania (June 1991), which announced the formation of the Socialist Party of Albania, he was elected its <\/span>chairman<\/span>. After the elections of March 22, 1992, which were won by the Democratic Party and its allies, he led the opposition. In June 1993, he was arrested and later sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment, on the charge of “abuse of office with benefit to third parties”. His arrest and conviction sparked many protests from leftist forces in the country and abroad, calling him a political prisoner. In March 1997 he was released by presidential decree. After the victory of the Socialist Party of Albania in the June 1997 elections, he was appointed prime minister (July). The government undertook a series of institutional, <\/span>economic,<\/span> and social reforms that helped the country’s recovery and development after the 1997 riots and brought it closer to the European Union. On October 1, 1998, he resigned as prime minister and a few weeks later as <\/span>chairman<\/span> of the Socialist Party of Albania. At the III Congress of the Socialist Party of Albania (October 1999), <\/span>he was<\/span> re-elected<\/span> as <\/span>chairman<\/span>. In August 2002, he received for the third time the vote of confidence in the Assembly as prime minister. With the victory of the Democratic Party and its allies in the elections of July 3, 2005, <\/span>he resigned as prime minister and then, on September 1, 2005, also as <\/span>chairman<\/span> of the Socialist Party. <\/span><\/span>(In the photo: Fatos Nano)<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
