Born in Hertfordshire, in 1922. Educated at Queen Elizabeth College, Barnet, and at <i>Worcester College, <\/i>Oxford, where he completed his first degree in history (1946). During World War II he served as a British liaison officer in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) <i>Stables Mission <\/i>in Northern Albania, where he parachuted in December 1943 to assist and maintain contact with Albanian resistance fighters. After the war, he began his diplomatic career, which he ended as the United Kingdom&#8217;s ambassador to France (1979\u20131982).
