Attended the Medical Polytechnic (Tirana) and advanced studies at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tirana (1967). He specialized in cardiology and was appointed a lecturer, simultaneously serving as a doctor at the General Hospital of Tirana. He was accepted as a member of the Labor Party of Albania in 1971. In 1978 he completed a 9-month specialization in Paris. He was elected a member of the European Committee for Medical Research based in Copenhagen (1986) and worked on a number of national and international scientific research projects. He is co-author of the text \u201cFiziologjia Patologjike\u201d (&#8220;Pathological Physiology&#8221;) (part I, 1972; part III, 1973) and published the monograph \u201cInfarkti i miokardit\u201d (&#8220;Myocardial Infarction&#8221;) (1986). After 1989, when protests against communism began in Eastern European countries, Sali Berisha was among the first to speak out in the press for changes and liberal reforms in Albania. In December 1990, he joined student demonstrations demanding a multiparty political system in Albania and left the Albanian Labor Party. At the First Congress of the Democratic Party of Albania (February 1991), Sali Berisha was elected the chairman of the Party. In the parliamentary elections of March 1991, he was elected deputy of Kavaja. With the victory of the Democratic Party in the March 1992 parliamentary elections, Sali Berisha was elected President of the Republic of Albania (April 9, 1992). Under his leadership, a series of institutional reforms were carried out, which paved the way for the construction of a democratic, legal state and a market economy. In international relations, he strengthened ties with the countries of the West, with NATO and with the United States of America. He was re-elected president (1996). After the early parliamentary elections (June 1997), the Democratic Party headed by him went into opposition; Sali Berisha resigned as president (July 23, 1997).
