He was recognized and accepted during his lifetime as a national poet with the epic poem “Lahuta e Malcis” (“The Highland Lute”). The influence and contribution was great beyond literature and, in addition to being a writer, Fishta was also known as a cleric and politician, as a publicist and founder of cultural and educational media institutions. He started his primary education at the Franciscan Seminary of Shkodra and continued at the Troshan Seminary. He completed his higher studies in philosophy and theology in Bosnia, in the assembly of Sutjeska and Livno. Here he comes into contact with the works of Slavic poets, such as Grgo Martić, Petar Petrović-Njegoš, and especially his favorite author Ivan Mažuranić, whose influence seems to have been great at this stage, alongside the authors of Greek and Latin antiquity. . He was ordained a priest in 1894, as a cleric of the Franciscan Order. After that, he devotes himself to intense clerical, cultural and political activity. He was one of the activists of the cultural society “Bashkimi” (“Unity”) and its representative in the Congress of Bitola (1908), where he was elected co-chairman of the alphabet commission of the Albanian language. In 1913 he founded the magazine “Hylli i Dritës” (“The Star of Light”) and was its first editor-in-chief. He was secretary general of the Albanian delegation at the Paris Peace Conference (1919). The year 1921 finds him a deputy in the Albanian parliament and vice president of this parliament. In 1921, he founded the Franciscan high school “Illyricum” in Shkodër. In the years 1935-1938 he was elected provincial of the Franciscan Order and a year later he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Italy. In addition to being an epic poet through “Lahuta e Malcis”, Fishta also successfully created in the lyrical and dramatic genres. He practiced prose only through journalism. Fishta gained fame as a national poet or as “Albanian Homer” through the epic poem “Lahuta e Malcis”. The complete work with its 30 songs appeared in 1937. So it took the poet a full 32 years to complete his masterpiece, which shows that the poet himself valued this work above all his works. As a lyricist, however, Fishta was realized through the poems collected in the publications “Mrizi i Zanave” and “Vallja e Parrizit“. The first volume is rather in the vein of the lyricism and patriotic emotion of the Renaissance; the second volume is in the wake of religious metaphysical literature. Predominant here too is the poetry engaged sometimes in function of ethnicity, sometimes in function of faith. But in the poem “Nji lule vjeshtet” (“An autumn flower”), Fishta appears as a pure lyric of intimacy, of human pain, of longing for the loss of a loved one, as a metaphysician of life and death, of love or eros, precisely in the Platonic sense of the term. This poem is among the best lyrical poems, not only of Fishta, but also of the entire Albanian lyric. He passed away in 1940 and was buried with great honors from the city of Shkodra. After the establishment of the communist regime, his work was declared reactionary and its circulation was banned. In 1967, Fishta’s grave was violated by the communist regime and his remains were thrown into the Drin river. His work continued to communicate with readers in Kosovo and in the diaspora. For the first time, his complete work was published in Pristina, in 1996-1997. (In the photo: Gjergj Fishta)

Text: The encyclopedic dictionary of Kosovo – Vol. I , Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo, Prishtina, 2018, page 450–451.

Photo: © https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:At_Gjergj_Fishta.jpg

Graphic processing: AHCF

Gjergj Fishta, a poet, high cleric, aesthetician, politician, polemicist, and playwright, was born in Fishtë of Zadrima.

[15

post-8182","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ditelindje
["GET
