It was one of the biggest and most important battles of the Kosovo Liberation Army. It marked the organized attack of Kosovo Liberation Army units against Serbian military forces. The frontal attack began on April 9, 1999, after the consultations of the Headquarters of the 138th Brigade with the Dukagjin Operational Area Command and the General Staff of the Kosovo Liberation Army and in coordination with the NATO (“North Atlantic Treaty Organization”) bombings. The attack started from the territory of Albania, along the border line in the region of Koshare, municipality of Gjakova. The leader of the operation was Agim Ramadani, Chief of Staff of Brigade 138, who led the preparation of the combat plan. On April 10, the Yugoslav military post in Koshare was taken. Soldiers of the first battalion, soldiers of the military police and the rapid intervention group “Cobras” took part in the fighting. On April 11, 1999, it was planned to take over the base of the Yugoslav army in Koshare. For this purpose, Agim Ramadani with a squad of the second battalion and the group “Cobras” had set off from the base of Koshare in the direction of Rrasa e Koshares, where he was supposed to meet with Anton Çuni and his unit. In these battles, Agim Ramadani was martyred on the front line. The battle continued in the following days. On April 19, at Rrasa e Koshares, Serbian forces attacked with infantry and heavy artillery. Sali Çekaj was also martyred there, on the front line. Fierce fighting continued almost every day until the end of the war. In addition to the participation of hundreds of volunteer fighters from all Albanian lands and the diaspora, other volunteers from foreign nations also participated. About 300 soldiers of the Kukës Division of the Albanian Army also participated. Thanks to this help, for the first time during the war in Kosovo, large-caliber cannons were used by the Kosovo Liberation Army on the Koshare front. The 138th Brigade, which had already received the name of its commander, had the main credit for the final breach of the Kosovo-Albania border and for the victory in this battle. The most important battles took place in Rrasa e Koshares, in Bjeshket e Junikut, in Rasa e Zogut in Koshare, in Qafë-Morina, etc. In this battle, 114 martyrs of the nation have fallen, while 438 fighters have been wounded. (In the photo: Memorial complex, Kosharé, Gjakovë.)

Text: The encyclopedic dictionary of Kosovo – Vol. I , Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo, Prishtina, 2018, page 178.

Photo: © https://amkmk.rks-gov.net/acadp_listings/kompleksi-memorial-beteja-e-koshares-koshare/

Graphic processing: AHCF

The “Battle of Koshare” took place, one of the Kosovo Liberation Army with the military forces of Serbia, on the Kosovo-Albania border.

[17

post-8271","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ngjarje
["GET
