Loxhë held strategic importance as it served as a crucial link between the KLA-controlled areas and the city of Peja. The presence of KLA units in Loxhë and the nearby village of Raushiq posed a considerable challenge to Serbian forces, as these villages were on the outskirts of Peja and near the Serbian military base in Zagerma, which was close to the village of Gorazhdec, where Serbian paramilitary units were stationed. The offensive against Loxhë and Raushiq was preceded by an armed incident during a visit by Vojislav Šešelj to Pejë. On July 6, Serbian forces, including the army, police, and paramilitaries, launched a simultaneous attack on Loxhë and Raushiq in the early morning hours. KLA fighters from the entire Dukagjin area, who had been reinforcing their positions in Loxhë for over two weeks in anticipation of the attack, participated in the battle. Former Yugoslav army officers who had recently arrived in Kosovo also joined the fight. Despite the heavy losses inflicted on Serbian forces and their subsequent retreat, Serbian forces launched a second offensive on Loxhë on July 11, which also failed to penetrate the village. The third and largest offensive began on August 15, involving a substantial assault. Early in the morning, Loxhë was bombarded by four fighter planes and six helicopters, with a brigade of tanks and armored vehicles supporting the attack, which was accompanied by constant artillery and infantry fire. The KLA units displayed heroic resistance throughout the day, though the fighting was intense and uneven. Throughout the three offensives, the KLA suffered significant losses, including the death of the front-line commander Skënder Çeku, as well as other leaders and fighters, with many others injured. (In the photo: Loxha village near Peja)

Text: The encyclopedic dictionary of Kosovo – Vol. I , Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo, Prishtina, 2018, page 179.

Photo: © https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063745320426&sk=photos&locale=sv_SE

Graphic processing: AHCF

The “Battle of Loxhë” was a significant clash between the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and Serbian military and police forces, occurring in the village of Loxha near Peja.

[17

post-8324","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ngjarje
["GET
