The federation “Atdheu” (1921-1922), a political, patriotic and cultural organization, was founded in Vlora. The Congress of the union of all societies and patriotic and democratic clubs of the country founded it. The initiator and organizer of the Congress was Avni Rustemi. 45 delegates participated in the Congress, representing 21 societies and clubs from 27 cities and provinces of the country, 110 intellectuals as observers and 5 representatives of the press. The Congress merged all societies into a federation named “Atdheu” (Homeland). Kolë Tromara was elected as its chairman, and after his resignation, the federation’s leadership was entrusted to Avni Rustemi. All the societies and clubs of the districts were transformed into branches of the “Atdheu” federation. The program of the “Atdheu” federation expressed the political will and liberal-democratic demands of the intellectual circles of Albanian society. The “Atdheu” federation announced in its program that through education, the word and the press, it would work to ensure the country’s economic and social progress, it would support in all ways the private initiative and the formation of commercial and industrial companies, would take care to improve the poor condition of the farmer by establishing an agricultural bank, etc. In the statue of “Atdheu” federation, it was stated that it would not engage in political activity. In reality, its illegal activity against the conservative political forces of the country was sensitive. In the beginning, the “Atdheu” federation was supported by the parliament and the government, but later, it was persecuted due to its political activity. By order of the government, officials were prohibited from participating in the ranks of the “Atdheu” federation. Later, in June 1922, the government forcibly closed many branches of the federation, and in August 1922, it banned its activities altogether. <\/span>(In the photo: The Congress of National Unity, which founded the “Atdheu” federation.)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
