Ahmet Dakli

Ahmet Dakli was born in Elbasan, an activist of the Albanian national movement. He was one of the organizers of the Congress of Elbasan (September 1909), supported Luigi Gurakuqi and Aleksandër Xhuvani in the opening of the “Normal” school in Elbasan, and fought in the Martanesh band (1912). He participated in the Assembly of Vlorë (1912) for the Declaration of Independence. In Ismail Qemali’s government, he was appointed as the secretary of the Ministry of Finance, collaborator, and advisor to Aqif Biçaku. He fought against the separatist attitudes of Esat Toptani and supported the Vlora War of 1920. During 1921, he served as Minister of Finance in the governments of Pandeli Evangjeli and Hasan Prishtina. He published the newspaper “Ura e Shkumbinit” (“Shkumbin’s bridge”) in Elbasan. He supported the Democratic Revolution of June 1924 and the government of Fan S. Noli. After its failure, he left Albania. He returned to the country benefiting from the amnesty and accepted the position of mayor of Durrës (1929–1937) and Elbasan (1937–1939). With the fascist occupation of Albania, he was arrested and interned in Italy. He ended his life in 1947 as a result of persecution by the communist regime. (In the photo: Ahmet Dakli)
