Alush Shima, film and costume painter, was born in Tirana. He attended the Artistic Lyceum “Jordan Misja” and studied and graduated at the High Institute of Arts (1965). He worked as a model painter in the artistic company “Migjeni”. In 1966, he started working at the film studio “Shqipëria e Re” as a costume painter and created the costumes for 11 films. From 1979 to 1990, he made 15 films as a painter, including: “Koha e largët” (“Distant time”)(1983); “Kush vdes në këmbë” (“Who dies on their feet”)(1984); “Hije që mbeten pas” (“Shadows left behind”) (1985); “Dhe vjen një ditë” (“And there comes a day”) (1986) etc. In 1990, he opened his first solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery with 210 works (most of them created since 1967, but not exhibited until the establishment of pluralism); in 1994 he opened the second solo exhibition “Ankth” (“Anxiety”) with 86 works, the themes and subjects of which were the stigmatization of the communist dictatorship (also these, works created during the period 1970-1991, but unpublished). He has participated in several international exhibitions such as: in England, USA, France, Switzerland, Greece, Malta, Turkey, Israel, Hong-Kong, Singapore, etc. He continues to create painting on canvas in two-dimensional art. He was the director of the National Art Gallery (1994–1997) and a member of the Albanian Parliament (1996–1997). (In the photo: Shima’s work “Flowers in a blue vase”, oil on canvas.)
