Daut Boriçi

Daut Boriçi was born in Shkodra, a cleric, patriot, teacher, and author of school texts. He attended the Bushatllinj Madrasa in Shkodra and the “Normal School” in Istanbul. He taught in schools in the city of Shkodra and made efforts to spread education in Lezha, Kruja, Kavaja, Tirana, Dibra, and Ulcinj. For the needs of Albanian schools, Daut Boriçi published: “Alfabeti shqip” (“Albanian alphabet”) (1861), “Abetarja shqipe” (“Albanian prime”)with Arabic letters (Istanbul, 1869, reprinted 1881). He left in manuscript: “Gramatikë shqipe” (“Albanian grammar”) “Fjalor turqisht-shqip” (“Turkish-Albanian dictionary”) and two diaries, one for the years 1844–1850 and the other for the years 1893–1895. His works, mainly linguistic, are of interest for the history of the alphabet, grammatology, lexicography, and dialectology of the Albanian language. During the years of the League of Prizren, he led the branch of the League in Shkodra, participated in drafting memorandums and protests sent to the Great Powers of Europe against the partitioning of Albanian lands, and organized and led the popular forces for the defense of threatened territories. After the suppression of the League of Prizren, the Ottoman Empire interned him in Anatolia (1881–1888). After internment, he directed education in the city of Shkodra (1889–1894).
