In Tirana, Fatmir Haxhiu, Albanian painter of the second half of the 20th century, “Merited Painter” and Grand Master of Work, passed away. He was born in Gjirokastër in 1927. He initially studied in Belgrade and Zagreb to become an artillery officer, but his passion was painting. After 1948, upon returning to Albania until the 1960s, Haxhiu performed various duties as a senior military officer. After graduating from the Higher Institute of Arts in Tirana (1965), the artist participated in all national exhibitions, mainly composed on the theme of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War. The works of Fatmir Haxhiu are mainly multi-figure compositional paintings, where the artist has carved historical characters but also other figures participating in the painting. He is the author of the painting “Shpallja e Republikës” (“Proclamation of the Republic”) (1976) and several paintings dedicated to the National Hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu.
