Fatmir Haxhiu, an Albanian painter of the second half of the 20th century, was born in Gjirokastër. He was recognized as a Distinguished Painter and Master Craftsman. Initially, he studied artillery training in Belgrade and Zagreb, but his passion was painting. After 1948, upon returning to Albania until the 1960s, Haxhiu held various high-ranking military positions. After completing the Institute of Fine Arts in Tirana in 1965, the artist participated in all national exhibitions, mainly with compositions themed around the National Liberation Anti-Fascist War. Fatmir Haxhiu’s works are primarily multi-figure compositional paintings, where the artist has depicted characters and personalities, both historical and other figures involved in the paintings. He is the author of the painting “Shpallja e Republikës” (“The Proclamation of the Republic”) (1976) and several paintings dedicated to the National Hero Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg. He passed away in Tirana in 2001. (In the photo: Haxhi’s work “Opening sieges”, 1978, oil on canvas.)
